Stan Getz Quintet II, January 1980, Irvington, New York

This Stan Getz tape (the second of two Stan Getz tapes offered by IPI) is taken from the same time period as the first tape and contains a similar style of playing. It captures Stan playing with a young, vibrant group of musicians.  Over 40 years later, the pianist on this performance, Andy LaVerne, reviewed the playing and noted: “This was one of Stan’s best bands, and his playing was at a peak. These recordings capture a very under-represented period of Stan’s career. I like the live/unprocessed sonics.” The quintet was recorded in 1980 at Getz’s NY studio with only two spaced B&K omnidirectional instrument mics (a very rare mic configuration for jazz quintets). Unlike most multi-microphone recordings, none of the instruments are shoved in the listener’s face but appear as they did when recorded. The result is a natural and organic stereo sound. This period of Stan’s playing is very underrepresented outside these taped sessions and listening to them provides a unique opportunity for listeners.
