CLARE FISCHER

Music Inspired by the Kinetic Sculpture of Don Conard Mobiles

featuring the sound of the Yamaha EX-42 3-manual organ

Recorded and produced under the supervision of John William Hardy.

For an artist such as Clare Fischer, who is both an instrumental virtuoso as well as a gifted composer and orchestrator, the Yamaha EX-42 is perhaps the ideal instrument of individual expression. This still rare "space age" colossus has so many innovative mechanisms that, in the opinion of many musicians including Fischer, it will lead to a revolution of organ construction. Among other things it has a tuneable keyboard and a portamento band (a horizontally arranged zone of glass over which the player may trace his finger to produce a sliding tone). The instrument is capable of massive full orchestra sound and tonal coloration that matches the highly individual sounds of any member instrument of the orchestra, plus many other sounds that do not exist in the typical orchestra!

Although Clare Fischer may he know primarily as a jazz pianist and arranger composer, his depth of expression and training beyond that idiom are vast. When Don Conard first heard Fischer's organ album on Revelation Records (Rev-13) in which Clare played the related but smaller instrument called the YC-10, he immediately suggested to Clare that he do an entire program of abstract improvisation that could relate aurally to a Conard's own kinetic sculpture. ( Don found that customers in his shop -Don Conard Mobiles, Ghiradelli Square, San Francisco—constantly inquired about Fischer's organ music coming over the speakers from the tape system in the shop. They felt it was the perfect background for viewing the mobile sculpture.)

I’d suggest that to introduce yourself to this longplay record you do so if possible in the appropriately stationed presence of a piece of Cunard Kinetic Sculpture —a mobile or other creation — and attempt to relate the visual and aural experience. Each stands easily alone but their cooperative effect is a fascinating example of the summation of stimuli or sensations toward an enhanced artistic experience ——J.W.H.
