Andy LaVerne Piano Trio — October 1980, New Haven, Connecticut
Andy LaVerne has appeared on several IPI releases showcasing his compositional skills as well as his excellent musicianship. He was a member of Stan Getz’s band when it consisted of brilliant young musicians, which IPI is honored to have recorded. (See elsewhere in this listing for our Stan Getz tapes.) The musicians playing here consist of Andy LaVerne on piano and the last rhythm section Bill Evans employed, Marc Johnson on bass, and Joe Labarbera on drums. These are serious musicians. However, the music on this tape is not for the faint of heart. It is both lyrical and, at times, ferocious, such as on the track, “Sabra,” resulting in a huge dynamic range, triggered by the fabulous drumming of Joe LaBarbera. Contributing to the result is the recording technique, which employed only two omnidirectional microphones, lending a natural and open sound to the music
