Where technology meets art

Jazz Noir — July 2022 Chicago, Illinois

Film Noir and jazz have been intertwined going back a good 75 years. Many musicians and listeners have been fascinated by the music accompanying noir films. The most prominent of these films, “Elevator To The Gallows,” was famously interpreted and played by Miles Davis. The ground-breaking music is brilliantly integral to the mood and message of the film. The analog tape here under discussion, Jazz Noir, is an homage to such films played by modern, world-class musicians utilizing piano, bass, drums, and trumpet. The music is gorgeous and at times haunting. The musicians are complemented by the very natural sound presentation due in no small part to the recording environment and custom equipment used to capture the event. The session was recorded at Pro Musica Chicago, directly to a custom Studer/Revox 8-track tape recorder through a Grace 8-channel preamp, creating a natural and transparent sound. Engineering by Jonathan Horwich and Ken Christianson.
